This 48,000 acre refuge consists mostly of bottomland and upland forests. The endangered red-cockaded woodpecker relies on the refuge for its existence. In addition, many neotropical birds inhabit the forests. Recreational opportunities include fishing, hunting, hiking, photography, and wildlife observation. No-wake boating; observation areas for waterfowl, migratory birds, and wide variety of wildlife; group educational programs available by prior arrangement; boat ramp, canoeing & tubing, nature trail, fishing, and picnic area. BIRDING: Red-cockaded woodpeckers actively managed and monitored for year-round viewing; more than 254 species of birds and numerous other wildlife; view from roads, 7 trails, 3 overlooks; permanent telescope at Goose Overlook; brochures, maps, bird list available at refuge office; state-of-the-art education center. HIKING: New education center; variety of trails available: Woodpecker Trail-excellent viewing of red-cockaded woodpeckers; easily accessible. Beaver Dam Trail-2 miles; excellent wildlife viewing. Trail of the Big Trees-4 miles. Wilderness Trail-3.4 miles; begins at footbridge crossing Noxubee River. Scattertown Trail-1.75 miles in Bevils Hill area of Refuge; most scenic trail; steep terrain.
