This 48,000 acre refuge consists mostly of bottomland and upland forests. The endangered red-cockaded woodpecker relies on the refuge for its existence. In addition, many neotropical birds inhabit the forests. Recreational opportunities include fishing, hunting, hiking, photography, and wildlife observation.
