PROJECT: Bridge Mural
Artwork portraying Chickasaw County’s key historical events
Project Completed Dec. 2024
The completed mural in Houston, Miss.
The Chickasaw County Historical Society was awarded a grant to create a mural portraying the county’s key historical events. The goal was also to beautify the abutments of the Highway 8 and GM&O railroad underpass, an eyesore to the Houston, Mississippi, community. The project was in the works for almost three years and artwork was completed in December 2024. The art was painted by Murals & More, whose crew enjoyed the time they spent in Houston.
The Murals & More team shared this on their Facebook page: “Just finished an amazing project in Houston! The focus of these murals is on not only the original Chickasaw inhabitants, but also their controversial removal and the subsequent founding of the County itself. A pretty involved undertaking. Took 6 of us almost a month to complete. Every item, person, animal, location, etc., has significant meaning. A heartfelt thanks to the people of Houston. In all of my years in this business, I have never run into a friendlier, more hospitable, welcoming group. From not only our clients, but from the Mayor and Police Chief on down. EVERYONE was simply amazing! And I know we all gained at least 10 pounds from the award-winning home-cooked meals they fed us! Their next step is going to be obtaining funding for lighting, sidewalks, crosswalks, parking, etc., just so that people can experience the artwork up close and personal. If you’re ever in the neighborhood – maybe riding the Natchez Trace or Tanglefoot Trail – stop on by. A town well worth visiting!”
